Through its "Think Ahead" campaign, the Dutch government is urging people to be better prepared for emergencies. This isn't because there's an immediate problem, but because the risk of disruptions—such as power outages, extreme weather, or cyberattacks—is increasing.
Those who are prepared remain calm and help not only themselves but also others.
Why preparation is so important
We live in a time when freedom and security are not self-evident. War nearby (as in Ukraine), cyberattacks, and extreme weather demonstrate how vulnerable our society can be.
If power, water, or internet suddenly goes out, it can take days for everything to work again. The government therefore advises: make sure you and your family can survive for 72 hours (3 days).
The 3 steps of Think Ahead
The government suggests three simple steps to get started:
1️⃣ Create an emergency kit
With an emergency kit you can bridge three days at home without outside help.
The base consists of:
-
Water (3 liters per person per day)
-
Long-lasting food
-
Flashlight and batteries
-
Emergency radio (FM/DAB, battery-powered or crank-powered)
-
Power bank or emergency power source
-
first aid kit
-
Cash (€70 per adult, €30 per child)
-
Blanket or sleeping bag
🛠️ At Alfa Survival you will find everything to complete your emergency kit:
-
⚡ Power stations and power banks – to charge your phone or radio in case of a power failure
-
🔦 Flashlights and emergency radios – so you stay in touch and don't miss anything
-
🩹 First aid kits -indispensable for minor injuries
-
🪓 Water filters – useful when drinking water is no longer available
2️⃣ Make an emergency plan
An emergency situation arises unexpectedly. An emergency plan helps keep things organized:
-
Where do you meet when communication breaks down?
-
Who needs extra help (children, elderly, pets)?
-
Where are important documents?
-
Which regional radio station should you turn on for information?
💡 Tip: Print out your emergency plan – digital copies won't help if the power goes out.
3️⃣ Talk to each other and help each other
Preparation is something you do together . Talk to neighbors, friends, and family about what you would do in an emergency.
This way you can help each other and prevent panic. Together you are stronger.
What if the power or internet goes out?
-
Radio: Keep listening via a battery-powered or hand-cranked emergency radio.
-
Phone: Keep a charged power bank handy.
-
Lighting: Use flashlights or lanterns, not open candles.
-
Payment: Make sure you have some cash with you, as using your debit card may be temporarily unavailable.
-
Cooling: Use coolers or eat non-perishable products first.
The message of Think Ahead
