30 dagen bedenktijd

With this plan, you're ready for 24–48 hours without power within two days. Short, practical, and affordable.

We're smart as long as there's electricity.

As long as we can look up what to do.

But during a power outage, more than just the light disappears.

No wifi.
No chargers.
No refrigerator.
No certainty.

And then you notice something important:

Being prepared isn't about gathering stuff.
It's about knowing what to do
and make sure that you can do it.

This is a compact step-by-step plan for 48 hours without mains power.
Practical. No panic. No excess.

Just an overview.

Day 1 — Foundation (T-48 to T-24)

Quick inventory (30 min)

  • People & needs: number of people, pets, medication, baby food.

  • Home: hob (electric/gas/induction), heating, hot water, ventilation.

  • Critical appliances: telephone, lamp, refrigerator/freezer, any medical equipment.

Goal: to know what really needs power and what can do without.

Water plan (45 min)

  • Rule of thumb: 2 L drinking water pppd + 1–2 L pp for cooking/washing up.

  • Minimum level 48 hours: 6 L pp (more is better).

  • Storage: clean bottles/jerry cans, store in a dark and cool place.

  • Backup: Water purification tablets or filter if quality is questionable.

Eating without mains power (60 min)

  • Choose 6–8 'no-cook' or 'low-cook' meals: wraps, canned beans/tuna, oatmeal, bagged/canned soups, nuts, energy bars.

  • Required: can opener, (reusable) cutlery/plates, kitchen towels.

  • Cooling tip: keep the freezer as full as possible; put perishable items at the front of the refrigerator.

Basic safety (30 min)

  • Testing smoke and CO detectors.

  • Candles only as a backup ; LED headlamp/lantern preferred.

  • Never use a barbecue or burner indoors (CO danger).

  • First aid: plasters, bandages, painkillers, disinfection.

Communication & Cash (20–30 min)

  • Emergency contact card with important numbers + address.

  • Meeting point with family/neighbours in case of mobile network failure.

  • Small amount of cash.

Day 2 — Setup (T-24 to T-0)

Light & Accessibility (30–45 min)

  • Per person: 1 flashlight or headlamp (LED is safer and more energy-efficient than candles).

  • Together: 1 lantern for the living room.

  • Charging: Charge all phones and power banks and use power saving mode.

Tip: A simple power bank (10–20k mAh) will charge your phone 1–3 times, which is often enough for 48 hours.

What we have ready as standard:

Cooling strategy (20 min)

  • Fridge/freezer now on coldest setting .

  • Leave the door closed in case of a failure; optionally use the refrigerator/freezer thermometer.

  • Freeze ice bottles (with water) to retain the cold for longer.

Cooking without mains power (30–45 min)

  • Options: outdoor burner, thermos + hot water (fill now), or 'no-cook' meals.

  • Get set up: lighter/matches, pan/kettle, heat-resistant surface.

Prepare house (30 min)

  • Emergency kit in a fixed location: lamp, power bank, cables, multi-tool, duct tape, batteries, first aid kit, blankets, wet wipes, garbage bags.

  • Limit draught by closing the door/placing an extra blanket in any cracks.

  • Tank/public transport balance check (pumps/gates may fail).

Vulnerable housemates (15–30 min)

  • 72-hour supply of medication; cool bag + cool pack if needed.

  • Baby/animal: food, diapers, cat litter, water & food.

During a blackout — what do you do when?

First 15 minutes

  1. Safety: Check for smoke/odor; extinguish candles; call 911 if in danger.

  2. Orientation: look outside (street lights) and check radio/telephone notifications.

  3. Cooling: Close the refrigerator/freezer and keep it closed.

First 2 hours

  • Phones on power saving mode, screen brightness down.

  • 1 fixed lamp for the room; other lamps off.

  • Use water sparingly; keep drinking water separate.

2–12 hours

  • Eat from plan A (no/low-cook).

  • Thermal comfort: layers, blankets; close unused rooms.

  • Check news every 2–3 hours.

12–48 hours

  • Rhythm: alternate cold meals with 1 hot meal per day.

  • Waste in sealed bags; hygiene with wet wipes/water conservation.

  • Neighbour check (especially for the elderly or families with small children).
